Design Judging Ideas

If possible, use judges that do not know the racers, and remember, this is an evangelistic event aimed at adults.  Maybe there are some car dealers or owners of detail shops in your community that would be willing to be judges.  They will benefit from the business exposure and the gospel message (and the free snacks!)  Maybe leaders from another club in town would judge for you, and you could for them.
The three areas of evaluation listed on our forms are: creative design, carving quality, and paint finish.  You can use these or other criteria for your event.
Some clubs add an additional category of novelty design.  They judge all of the vehicles that look like cars together, and judge all of the non-car vehicles in the novelty category. However, it can become somewhat difficult, sometimes to determine whether a car is a car or not a car. Your judges will have to be flexible.
To spread out the awards, some clubs decide that if a car wins in speed they are not qualified to win design also.   If this is how you decide to proceed, be sure the design judges determine the top six winners of design in each category.  This will give you room to eliminate three if they happen to win in speed.
Some clubs have the racers themselves vote on the best cars.  You will need to design a simple ballot and give one to everyone you want to vote.  In this case there will not be any design judges, but you will need vote counters.
If there are too many cars for the judges to evaluate every car individually, have the judges nominate a certain number of cars, (maybe 5 cars for each judge), then evaluate only those cars.
Another way to judge design is to give every car an award.  This can be done with certificates designed on the computer and filled out by the judges.  This takes some creativity on the part of the judges, but gives every car owner something to be proud of.  Examples of these awards would be: most unusual, most humorous, fastest looking, most decals, most realistic looking, smoothest, strangest shape, most patriotic, funniest, most unique, brightest yellow, sportiest, best of show, skinniest, shiniest, most flowers, best animal, yummiest looking, best boat, etc.  Make up categories as you go. (Click here to see how this might be done).
Another way to give out more design awards is to have several pre-determined categories like the ones above that will be awarded to the cars that meet the criteria.
The Grand Prix Organizer can facilitate your car judging.
