Design Judging

In the speed contest, there will be only 1 winner for each race category. That means that everybody else loses. For many kids, going home a loser is not an attractive prospect.
The idea here is to not just select the most beautifully designed and built derby car. Rather, use this opportunity to reaffirm the child's efforts in making their car. In this way, every child can leave with recognition of their work.
An adult will design many of the cars. This is particularly true for the younger kids. So, the Design Judges should not compare an adult-designed (and perhaps fabricated) car to a car designed and fabricated by a child. To avoid this, each car can be the "Best" in its own category. By defining the "categories" very narrowly, the car can be the only car in the category, thus deserving the recognition of "The Best."
If you have a large number of cars, you may have to be very specific for your "The Best …" awards. For instance, you may have several red cars. So you can refine the award: "The Best Red Rocket Car",  "The Best Red Turtle Car", "The Best Red House Car". Doing this allows you to also award  "The Best Silver Rocket Car", "The Best Green Turtle Car" etc. Don't limit your awards by being too general if you don't have to.
I would recommend that design awards be awarded after the speed races. In this way, the disappointment of losing the speed race is replaced by the encouragement of being rewarded. The event ends on an up note for everybody. (The speed winners will continue to bask in their win. Their honor will not be diminished).
Below are some ideas for the Design Judges. (Don't use the grouping categories in italics below. They just help my organization and presentation of the list). Clearly, the list is limited only by your imagination and what you may see on race day.
